There are many variations in a game of poker. These are broadly classified into 4 categories which are Straight, Stud, Draw and Community Card poker. The earliest game was the straight type that has been around for ages and it was improved into all the different types that can be seen these days.

There are now two cards in hand (hole cards) and five cards on the table (board cards) that makes 7 in all. Each player is allowed to use any 5 of the 7 cards to make the strongest hand and win the pot.

This is a complex form of play in which though a full hand is dealt in the start each player is given the option of exchanging (or drawing) few of their cards at a chance of a better hand. The most common of this family is the 5 Card Draw in which 5 cards are dealt to each player. On the basis of these 5 cards the players place their bets. The players are now allowed to draw cards to improve their hand's strength. You can only draw as many cards as you are willing to discard, meaning that after the draw phase, each player will be left with only 5 cards in hand. This round is followed by a betting round in which the players can place their bets depending on the new strength of their cards. In the showdown, after all bets are leveled, the strongest hand wins the pot.
The Stud family is also one that is played in many card circles but this family is not that popular. The Seven Card Stud is the one that is played more widely than the others. In this family there are a specific number of cards dealt face down and also face up. Only 5 cards from the number dealt are considered to evaluate the strength of the hand.
